How Much Are My Comics Worth?
The honest answer: it depends on three things: how old they are, which titles they are, and what shape they're in. Most comics are worth a few dollars. A few are worth a lot. Here's how to tell roughly where yours fit.
This is a rough guide, not an offer. Every collection is different, and condition changes everything. The surest way to know is to let us look: call or text us.
Start with the cover price
The price printed in the top corner of the cover is the quickest clue to a comic's age.
| Cover price | About when | Era | What a typical book is worth | What the best ones can reach |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10¢ | 1938-1961 | Golden Age and the 1950s | $10 to a few hundred, even well worn | Thousands, sometimes far more, for famous first issues and first appearances |
| 12¢ | 1962-1969 | Silver Age | $5 to $100+ | Hundreds to thousands for key Marvel and DC issues (first appearances, #1s) |
| 15¢-35¢ | 1969-1979 | Bronze Age | $2 to $30 | Hundreds to thousands for a handful of keys (first Wolverine, first Punisher...) |
| 40¢-$1.00 | 1980s | Copper Age | $1 to $10 | $100s for some keys in high grade |
| $1.25 and up | 1990s to today | Modern | Usually under $5 (many were printed by the millions) | A few keys and rare variants reach $100s |
Ranges are rough, for books in average used condition, and change with the market. They're here to help you guess, not a promise of what any book will sell for.
What makes one comic worth more than another
- Key issues. A character's first appearance, a #1, an origin story or a famous cover. One key can be worth more than a whole box of other books.
- Condition. The same book can be worth $20 or $2,000 depending on its shape. Collectors grade on a 10-point scale (how grading works). Don't try to clean or fix a comic: it usually lowers the value.
- Age and how many survived. Older books were read, traded and thrown out, so fewer exist today.
- Graded cases. A book sealed in a hard plastic case with a grade label (CGC, CBCS) has a known grade, which buyers trust.
- Demand. Movies and shows can make an older character's first appearance jump in value.
Worn, stained or coverless?
Don't throw them out. Old comics in rough shape still sell, and some coverless Golden Age books are worth real money. Show us before you decide.
How to check yours
- Look at the cover price and the year (on the cover or the first inside page, in small print).
- Set aside anything with a 10¢ or 12¢ cover, any #1, and anything in a graded case.
- Count roughly how many you have. You don't need a list.
- Call or text us with that and a few photos. We'll tell you what you have, honestly, and usually come to you.
